ESOL Skills for Work
For many employees, English is not their first language. A Skills for Life course provides real and immediate benefits for your business and the employee. Your business gains through improved service and customer satisfaction. Employee training results in greater confidence and a higher level of communication skills.
These courses are designed to meet the immediate English language needs of learners from non-English speaking countries who are in employment in the UK. They offer opportunities for the rapid acquisition of skills, through flexible (short course) programmes targeting the immediate, broad, work-related needs of participants. They provide a nationally recognised qualification framework through the National Open College Network.
English for Work
Aimed at speakers of English as a second language who need to improve their functional English. The course will generally include functional English for the work environment; vocabulary; conversation practice and conventions such as being polite, expressing apologies and making requests. Individually tailored to meet the needs of students and employers to help them perform effectively in their job.
Speaking and Listening Skills
Designed for students with lower levels of English this course works towards the Speaking and Listening part of the Skills for Life qualification. Adapted to the needs of the students and your organisation the training is tailored to the role of the employee.
Certificate in Literacy
Designed for anyone who would like to brush up on their speaking, reading and writing skills. Participants will learn how to listen and respond to spoken language, follow explanations and instructions of varying lengths and adapt responses appropriately. They will read and understand straightforward texts of varying lengths on a variety of topics accurately and independently. They will also learn how to write clearly to communicate information, ideas and opinions; using length, format and style appropriate to purpose and audience.
Certificate in Numeracy
Designed for anyone who would like to brush up on their number skills. Covers how to understand and use; calculate and manipulate and interpret and communicate mathematical information.
Cost
Funding is available to cover part of the training. Employers are expected to contribute towards the overall cost of the English for Work and Speaking and Listening Skills courses. The Certificate in Literacy and the Certificate in Numeracy are part of the Train to Gain initiative and is delivered with no cost to the employer.
Duration
Course duration varies, however courses generally run between 30-60 hours in length.
Entry requirements
Applicants require some literacy, including the ability to read and write, in their own language(s).
