“I would recommend Family Learning to everyone.”

Veronica first became aware of Family Learning through New Pin Nursery where she took part in a range of practical courses working with her son, who was a toddler at the time. She felt motivated to further her education and went along to Amberley Centre to find out more. Veronica tried a few other classes. It was when she enrolled in Family Learning Numeracy and Literacy courses that she felt comfortable –“ Family Learning was a godsend! It’s not just straight forward boring learning – it’s creative and that is fun. The courses involve different ways of learning and because I’m dyslexic I really appreciate and enjoy it!”.

Veronica was given a tutor once a week for an hour to help her with her dyslexia. They worked on strategies to support her learning and the tutor liaised with her Literacy and Numeracy teachers.

“It’s so hard being dyslexic,” explains Veronica, “but in Family Learning I felt so understood and supported. I felt at ease – I didn’t need to be ashamed and could just be me!”

Family Learning also helped Veronica work with her son. There were opportunities to discuss any issues with the tutors and he was very much involved in the learning; activities were taken home to support his education and there were special shared sessions that her son loved, especially when they worked together to design and make a treasure box. They also greatly enjoyed an excursion to the British Museum where they carried out a topic on money as part of the Numeracy course. “Not many courses offer museum trips and as a parent they are a very good tool,” adds Veronica.

At the moment Veronica is focusing on her basic skills. In the future she wants to be a dietician.“I would recommend Family Learning to everyone,” she says. “It can guide you in the right direction. I now have hope. I’m dyslexic, but I now have a future.”

The course was extremely important for all of us. Maths was in a way easy to understand. It was practical and I could understand many of the things that before made me nervous.” 07/02/12 Rute Pereira de Souza evaluating a Maths and Craft course.
What I find particularly useful is having practical suggestions about how to structure a story for children. Also, how to comment on pictures, words and the plot and how to change the focus from the story to feelings. You can use books to talk about everyday life.” 05/03/12 Francesca Colombo evaluating a Bookstart workshop
It’s really nice to be doing something like this with your child. It’s therapeutic and helps you to bond as well as learning something. I can use this now with my other child at home.” 28/01/12 Andie Williams evaluating a Pimlico Library workshop.
It was very interesting for adults as well as children. It is also very nice to do something outside of the home as a family. Me and my daughter enjoyed it very much. Excellent!” 04/02/12 Alison Watts evaluating a Paddington Children’s Library workshop.
