What is the course about?
This course will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to provide a safe and stimulating environment for children and young people. It will enable you to assess and support child development and understand how to safeguard children. You will learn about legislations, policies and procedures that influence the childcare provision and ways of implementing them in your practice. You will research the meaning of Inclusion, Equality and Diversity and will learn how to implement these concepts while working with children and young people. The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills of supporting positive behaviour in children and young people. In addition you will learn essential skills and knowledge in gaining employment.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
This is a Level 2 course that requires you to attend a suitable childcare setting for at least 5 hours a week for 36 weeks. You also need to have minimum Level 1 in spoken and written English and a valid DBS check.
What topics does the course cover?
The course covers the following topics: strategies for promoting children and young people's positive behaviour, knowledge and understanding of child and young people's development and ways of enhancing it, promoting positive relationships with children and adults, safeguarding children and young people, supporting children and young people's health and safety, the importance of play and creativity, searching for a job, preparing for an interview, working as a team.
How will I be taught and assessed?
You learn the knowledge and skills by attending the college and placement each week. You will be assessed by producing a portfolio of evidence that proves your ability and competence to work with children and young people aged 0-19. You will also be assessed on your competency in supporting children by having direct observation and professional discussion with an experienced and qualified assessor.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
This course will provide you with full Level 2 qualification in childcare. By the end of the course you will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of Safeguarding, Health and Safely. You will be able to work with others to support and promote children's development. You will have working knowledge of the legislation, policies and procedures that are required by the OFSTED inspection. The course will develop your ICT and research skills. You will learn essential skills to gain employment.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
This qualification can lead to employment as a nursery assistant and/or opportunities to progress to a Level 3 childcare or teaching assistant course.
