Dyslexia Awareness Week 31 October to 6 November 2011

Are you the 1 in 10?

Research shows that up to 10% of the population suffer from dyslexia; in adult education the percentage rate is believed to be significantly higher. This means that lecturers and tutors will almost certainly be teaching some dyslexic students within their classes.

We will be holding workshops for staff and students to promote awareness of dyslexia and provide a better understanding of the difficulties associated with dyslexia.

The Learning Centre will be offering individual or small group training for students and staff on computer software programmes suitable for dyslexics. These include:

  • Dragon Naturally Speaking. Speech recognition software which responds to the learner's voice.
  • TextHelp! Read and Write. Acts as a proof reader and can read back the learners work to detect errors
  • Inspiration & Freemind. Mind mapping software for planning assignments, projects or essays.
  • Changing computer options. See how to change background colours, font size, icon size and other options.
