Why study IELTS exam preparation with WAES

IELTS scores are recognised by universities and colleges, employers and professional bodies. British universities and other centres of education generally require IELTS level 6.0 or higher as evidence of language ability.

Course Overview

This course prepares you for the IELTS academic exam for university entrance. It is not suitable for anyone taking the English language test for UK citizenship. You need to be working towards ESOL Level 2 (CEF B2/C1) and planning to commence study at a UK university within two years of commencing the course.

The course will prepare you for all components (writing, reading and speaking) of the Cambridge IELTS Academic exam . We will also help with exam registration at a central London location. The entire course is classroom based. You will also be required to complete homework assignments and to attend all sessions. Anyone whose attendance drops below 90% will be withdrawn from the course.

The course is free, subject to the GLA's low wage requirements. View our ESOL page for more details. You will, however, be expected to pay for your own exam fee (typically £195) - if you are experiencing severe financial hardship, we may be able to help you with the exam fee, but this will not cover any re-sits.

Equipment required include pens, pencils and writing paper, as well as a folder to keep all your course materials. You will also need access to a computer. You may need an English dictionary - your teacher can advise.

After completing the course, you should be able to achieve the required score for university entrance (typically 6.5, but check with your universities of choice beforehand as many require a higher score). The course is intended only for those who are planning to commence university within two years or who otherwise need to demonstrate their ability in English for which Academic IELTS is a requirement - this is because the score is only valid for 2 years. Always check first with your intended university on their English language requirements before applying. It is NOT recognised as proof of English for UK citizenship (full details on the Home Office website for recognised tests).
