What is the course about?

Learners will have one wheel each. This course covers all techniques including basic beginner-level skills such as clay preparation, centring, throwing to cylinder, making bowls and turning a foot ring. More advanced learners will be challenged with individual tasks such as making lids, spouts and plates, etc. There will be an opportunity to try the more challenging aspects of wheel throwing techniques such as cutting and joining. Learners will also have the opportunity to build on existing skills and to extend them.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

No.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

Suitable for all levels, no prior knowledge of pottery is required to attend this course. The course is ideal for beginners or for those who have some understanding of wheel throwing and would like to improve their skills.

What topics does the course cover?

Clay preparation, centering, cylinders, bowls, and turning foot-rings. Advanced topics include making lids, casseroles, spouts, bottles, plates, cutting and joining.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Learners will regularly receive feedback on their progress from the tutor.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Although decoration and glaze materials are included, we do make a charge (priced per kilo) for the clay used before the first firing only.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the course learners will be able to centre and make wheel thrown shapes with some confidence. More experienced learners will have improved their existing skill set.
