What is the course about?
The AAT foundation certificate in book-keeping is the intermediate level of AAT Bookkeeping qualification and focuses on developing your manual bookkeeping and basic accounting skills to give you the skills and essential knowledge you need to manage books effectively. It is nationally-recognised qualification that is designed to provide you with a solid introduction to manual double entry bookkeeping, including associated documents and processes, up to Trial Balance standard, providing a great starting point for anyone wishing to start a career in the accounting industry.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
A minimum of L1 in English & Maths & working towards Level 2. Confidence with numbers, problem solving skills and good attention to detail are useful strengths to be successful in this area of learning. Students enrolling on this course will also be expected to sit an English and Maths Initial Assessment prior to being accepted onto the course.
What topics does the course cover?
The course consists of two accounting units; Book – Keeping Transactions & Book – Keeping Controls. Some of the major topics that will be covered included; Double entry concept, Discounts, Preparing & processing customer & supplier invoices & credit notes, recording receipts & payments, performing bank reconciliation, processing ledger transactions & extracting a trial balance, using & maintaining control accounts & journals, the banking processes.
How will I be taught and assessed?
The course will be delivered through a variety of teaching methods; demonstration, discussion and explanation from the tutor, group interaction with tutor and peers. Learners will receive instruction sheets, handouts, practice exercises and one-to-one tuition. There will be an ongoing assessment (formative) to assess your learning, understanding & progress on the course & also to inform ILP. In addition, there will be end of unit/course exam (Summative) for qualification & certification.

The AAT Qualifications are recognised by employers as practical and technical qualifications that prepare students for the world of work and for working specifically in accountancy and finance roles. Upon successful competion, you will be able to Understand financial transactions within a bookkeeping system, Process customer & supplier transactions & The Foundation Certificate in Book - Keeping can lead to employment as: Accounts administrator, Accounts assistant, Accounts payable clerk, Purchase/sales ledger clerk, Trainee accounting technician, Trainee finance assistant.
