What is the course about?

The AAT level one award in book-keeping is the introductory level of the AAT Bookkeeping qualification and focuses on developing your knowledge & understanding of bookkeeping and basic accounting skills to give you the skills and essential knowledge you need to progress onto the intermediate level courses or find entry level jobs in book - keeping. The course consists of four units; Introduction to Book - Keeping, Working Within Book - Keeping, Book - Keeping & Accounts & Spreadsheet Software (Excel).

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

There are no entry requirements, but confidence with numbers, problem solving skills and good attention to detail are useful strengths to be successful in this area of learning. Students enrolling on this course will also be expected to sit an English and Maths Initial Assessment prior to being accepted onto the course.

What topics does the course cover?

Introduction to Bookkeeping; Introduction to the job role and career path for a bookkeeper, The different types of business organisation, Bookkeeping terms. Working within Bookkeeping; Single-entry bookkeeping, What is VAT, Cash and credit transactions, Coding and batch control, The books of prime entry. Bookkeeping and Accounts; Financial documents, How to record financial transactions in the Books of Prime Entry, How to deliver a Bank Reconciliation, The Petty Cash System, The Imprest System, A TB from the General Ledger. Excel spreadsheet software; Entering, edit and organising data in spreadsheets, Formulas and tools to summarise / display spreadsheet information.

How will I be taught and assessed?

The course will be delivered through a variety of teaching methods; demonstration, discussion and explanation from the tutor, group interaction with tutor and peers. Learners will receive instruction sheets, handouts, practice exercises and one-to-one tuition. There will be an ongoing assessment (formative) to assess your learning, understanding & progress on the course & also to inform ILP. In addition, there will be end of unit/course exam (Summative) for qualification & certification.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

On completion, you will be able to perform bookkeeping tasks with confidence in a work environment & or progress onto the intermediate levels of the AAT book – keeping or Accounting qualifications.
