What is the course about?

The GCSE English course will help you gain essential skills through your study of a range of materials from different sources, including literary and non-literary material and media. You will learn how to use written English for a variety of purposes from imaginative writing to making reports. By taking this course, you will become more confident in using English, paying due attention to the appropriateness and quality of written expression.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

Yes, please contact our customer services before enrolling.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a Level 2 course. Before you can enrol, you will need to have an initial assessment and an interview with one of our assessors to ensure the course is the correct level for you. ESOL applicants must already hold ESOL at level 2 or above and Functional Skills level 1. Please allow enough time to do this. To avoid disappointment enrol early - this is a very popular course.

What topics does the course cover?

Learners will be able to select suitable styles and registers of spoken English for a range of situations and contexts, showing assured use of standard English where appropriate. They will be able to initiate conversations and demonstrate sensitive listening.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Your tutor will use a combination of teaching styles and concepts including: using pair and small group work, providing homework tasks, practice exams and online facilities. All our classes are equipped with an interactive whiteboard making learning fun and more effective. Regular attendance and completion of homework tasks is essential for the successful completion of this course.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

This is a free course for qualifying candidates. However, you will be expected to supply your own A4 folder to keep your work, pen and paper for notetaking and any supporting text books. Your teacher will be able to recommend which books to buy.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

GCSEs are the gateway to many jobs and further or higher education. Please refer to the UCAS or individual university websites for which grade you need for any given course.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

The GCSE is a stand-alone qualification that many people want to achieve because they didn't have a chance to complete it at school. The GCSE qualification is also a useful Level 2 certificate recognised by employers and further and higher education providers.
