What is the course about?

This course is suitable if you speak a little English and can use the alphabet. The main focus of this course is on improving your listening and speaking skills. You will be able to obtain information from simple verbal communication, be able to speak English to communicate, be able to convey information and be able to engage in discussion with others.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is an entry level 1 course. Before you can enrol, you will need to have an interview with one of our initial assessors to make sure the course is suitable for you.

What topics does the course cover?

By the end of the course you will be better able to follow the gist of simple verbal communication, obtain necessary information from simple verbal communication for a given task and follow single step verbal instructions correctly for a given task. You will use pronunciation to convey intended meaning and use simple language appropriate for context when speaking. You will learn to provide a short verbal account for a given task and convey relevant detail during a simple verbal communication. You will make relevant contributions to discussion, express simple views clearly during verbal communication and make effective verbal requests to obtain information.

How will I be taught and assessed?

The course is classroom based and online. You will be expected to do homework regularly and will make use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Teams). When you are ready, you will take Skills for Life exams covering reading and writing.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Pens, pencils and writing paper. A folder to keep all your course materials. An English dictionary - your teacher can give advice and suggestions. You will also need access to a computer.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

This course will give you the opportunity to focus on improving the speaking and listening skills you need most support with. Your teacher will help you identify areas to work on and will develop a learning plan appropriate for you.
