What is the course about?
This course is for learners who are inexperienced using computers and software. It has been designed to give you practical skills in using information technology and digital skills such as word processing and presenting information for a variety of reasons. It will enable you to carry out tasks at home and work. It is ideally suited to those who have limited experience in using ICT or are just starting out. You will need a reliable internet source and a computer or laptop, but some learners maybe entitled to support with new equipment.
Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?
No.
What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
You should be comfortable using a keyboard and mouse and have some experience using a PC, laptop or tablet. You will also need to be working towards Level 1 in English and Maths. For ESOL learners, we require ESOL at Level 1 or above. You will be asked to sit an initial assessment to determine whether this course is the best level for you. To be considered you should be working towards E3.
What topics does the course cover?
Areas covered on the course include - Using devices and handling information, creating and editing, communicating, transacting, being safe and responsible online.
How will I be taught and assessed?
This course is offered as a face to face programme where you will receive tuition and direction at set times during the week from your tutor. You will need to be able to access this direct teaching input, engaging with your tutor and peers and have time to practice your skills as homework. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
Learners on a low income or in receipt of applicable benefits will not be required to pay a fee. You will need regular access to a computer or laptop and reliable internet service to complete this course. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
Successful learners will have gained a better understanding of using ICT systems for both home and work, such as sending emails and using the internet for a variety of reasons. You will also have developed some word processing skills alongside a basic understanding of Microsoft Products such as Excel and PowerPoint.
