What is the course about?

This course is suitable if you are already able to use English structures with a degree of accuracy and fluency. You will learn language skills through topics, grammar practice and vocabulary development. The focus of this course is on improving your speaking and listening skills. You will be able to obtain information from verbal communication, be able to speak English to communicate, be able to convey information and be able to engage in discussion with others.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is an entry level 3 course. Before you can enrol, you will need to have an interview with one of our initial assessors to make sure the course is suitable for you. If you already study with us, your current tutor can help you enrol.

What topics does the course cover?

Achieve a level of attainment in English which is appropriate to your needs. Use language confidently at a level to function in school or college, at work or in society in general. Engage in learning which is relevant to you and will provide opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. Achieve nationally recognised qualifications.

How will I be taught and assessed?

The course is mainly online. You will be expected to do homework regularly and will make use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Teams). When you are ready, you will take Skills for Life exams in speaking and listening.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

You will need access to a computer and some IT skills. Pens, pencils and writing paper. A folder to keep all your course materials. An English dictionary - your teacher can give advice and suggestions.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the course you will be better able to follow the gist of straightforward verbal communication, obtain relevant detail from straightforward verbal communication and follow straightforward verbal instructions correctly for a given purpose. You will learn to use clear pronunciation to convey intended meaning and use appropriate language in context according to formality. You will be able to present information using an appropriate structure for a given purpose, provide a verbal account of relevant information for a given audience and convey relevant detail during verbal communication. You will contribute constructively to discussion on straightforward topics, express views constructively during verbal communication on straightforward topics, plan action with others for a given task and obtain relevant information from others.
