What is the course about?

This course is for learners who are inexperienced using computers and software. It has been designed to give you practical skills in using information technology and digital skills such as word processing and presenting information for a variety of reasons. It will enable you to carry out tasks at home and work. It is ideally suited to those who have limited experience in using ICT or are just starting out. You will need a reliable internet source and a computer or laptop, but some leanrers maybe entitled to support with new equipment.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

Although there are no formal entry requirements and the course is levelled at Entry 2/3 (which is suitable for beginners), you should be comfortable using a keyboard and mouse and have some experience using a PC, laptop or tablet. You will also need to be working twoards Level 1 in English and Maths. For ESOL learners, we require ESOL at Level 1 or above. You may be asked to sit an initial assessment to determine whether this course is the best level for you.

What topics does the course cover?

Areas covered on the course include: Displaying information using ICT, using ICT to find information and communicating information using ICT. During the course you will become familiar with the more common Microsoft Office products, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is offered as an on line programme where you will receive tution and direction at set times during the week from your tutor. You will need to be able to access this direct teaching input, engaging with your tutor and peers and have time to practice your skills as homework. You will be required to upload a portfolio of your work that will be set as a series of assignments that you will need to complete in a timely manner throughout the duration of the programme. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Learners on a low income or in receipt of applicable benefits will not be required to pay a fee. We may also be able to provide a laptop*. You will need regu;at access to a computer or laptop and reliable internet service to complete this course. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

Successful learners will have gained a better understanding of using ICT systems for both home and work, such as sending emails and using the internet for a variety of reasons. You will also have developed some word processing skills alongside a basic understanding of Microsoft Products such as Excel and Powerpoint.
