What is the course about?

This course is designed and prepared for learners who wish to take up floristry as a new skill or hobby, which they can then develop onto a professional level if qualification courses are taken up. This particular course will allow beginners to work with fresh plant material.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This course is suitable for beginners, and requires no particular prior qualifications, but some experience would be an advantage. You should be able to recognise basic flowers by name.You should display a satisfactory level of numeracy and literacy skills.

What topics does the course cover?

Health and Safety, Conditioning method, Basic Principle of design, Button holes, Basket arrangements for Mothers' Day, Table Centre pieces for weddings, Hand-Tied for Valentine's Day, and a Table display for Christmas, Corporate design for hotels.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Discussions among the class and peers, and practical elements will be observed by the tutor. You will be informally assessed on the course, engaging in a mixture of discussion, demonstration and practice as well as a variety of teaching and learning strategies.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

You will be advised by your tutor on the range and type of flowers and foliage needed for your arrangements. In addition, a pair of scissors, floral knife, wires and mechanics will be provided by the centre. Please bring a camera, note book and pen to record your progress.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

You will be able to create the range of different displays as mentioned above, for various occasions, for family and friends, and as a leisure hobby.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

Once completed, you can progress onto an accredited Practical Level One Award or Certificate Floristry course.
