What is the course about?

This short course is designed for beginners with an interest in learning flower arranging as a new skill or hobby. You will work with fresh flowers and foliage and learn the skills required to create both contemporary and traditional designs. You will be introduced to the basic design techniques and construction methods and gain the confidence to create the designs on your own. Each week you will take home a beautiful flower arrangement that you have made.

No.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This course is designed for beginners with a keen interest in flower arranging. No prior knowledge is required as the course will take you through the basic steps to build your knowledge and understanding progressively.

What topics does the course cover?

You will learn to recognise the names of flowers and foliage, and how to handle, condition and care for fresh materials. Basic principles of design, and techniques for both traditional and contemporary s of flower arranging. Basic construction methods, including linea design, table centre, free standing arrangement and leaf manipulation.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Your tutor will demonstrate techniques and most of the time will be spent making the arrangements with help and guidance given by the tutor. There will be classroom discussions, and practical elements will be observed by the tutor with evaluation and feedback for your designs. At the end of the course learners will assess their individual progress and progression with the tutor. Notes or handouts will be provided where applicable.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Flowers will be provided for each session. In addition, a pair of scissors, floral knife, wires and mechanics will be provided by the centre to use in class. Please bring a notebook and pen, and use your phone camera to record your progress.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

You will have gained confidence, and understanding of the basic skills needed to create simple designs. You will be able to create arrangements for various occasions for family and friends, and as a hobby, which you will be able to take home.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

You can develop your skills further on one of our specialist short courses, or take an accredited course in Floristry starting in September.
