What is the course about?

The GCSE English Language course will help you gain essential skills through your study of a range of materials from different sources, including 19th Century literature and 2th and 21st Century non-literature material and other media. You will learn how to use written English for a variety of purposes from imaginative writing to writing speeches. By taking this course, you will become more confident in writing more effectively in English, giving presentations and also applying for a role that requires a pass at GCSE.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a level 2 course and you will need to have completed either Level 1 and/or 2 Functional Skills in English or hold GCSE with a lower grade of D or below or 3 or below. For students whose English is a second language a Level 2 ESOL qualification is required or an ESOL initial assessment to show that you are working at Level 2.A full assessment of English Language will be conducted before enrolment.

What topics does the course cover?

There are three strands to the assessment. 1. You be assessed at the centre during Term 2 on speaking and listening and will be required to produce a 5 minute presentation on a topic of your choice. 2. One exam in June (set nationally) which will focus on reading 19th Century fiction and you will complete an imaginative essay. 3. One exam in June (set nationally) which will focus on reading 2th and 21st Century texts and transactional writing such as writing letters, articles, speeches, reviews, etc.

You will be required to buy or access different text books which will be used throughout the course.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

Your writing skills will have developed well and you should be able to follow a level 3 vocational programme of study confidently and competently.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

The GCSE is a stand-alone qualification that many people want to achieve because they didn't have a chance to complete it at school. The GCSE qualification is also a useful Level 2 certificate recognised by employers and further and higher education providers.
