What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
Level 1. This is a Level 1 course so you do not need any design experience but you should have good basic computer skills. We use MACS at WAES so PC users may find the course more difficult
What topics does the course cover?
You will be introduced to Graphic Design through materials and processes as well as software techniques. Explore colour, texture, surfaces and marks to create unique work and use software to explore layout, typography and presentation.
How will I be taught and assessed?
The tutor will guide you through class exercises and a set project. There is no formal examination. You will be assessed on the work you produce for your project and your work in class which you must hand in at the end. Please note, you will be able to collect your work after the course.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
You will need to purchase a sketchbook and drawing tools which you will need for sketching, a USB stick or portable hard drive for you to take your digital work home. Ideally, you will need access to Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to practice your skills. For those learners who do not own this software, you can access the software in the Learning Centre.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
You will be able to create and work on designs produced in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and you will understand the basics of using this software. You will understand how to work to a project brief and take creative decisions.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
Learners can move onto a Level 2 qualification in Graphic Design or to a Level 1 Web Design course
