What is the course about?

This course is an ideal qualification for anyone wishing to develop practical, transferable skills in ICT in order to work confidently and effectively at work or at home. It is suitable for a wide range of individuals and is key to the successful completion of various higher-level qualifications such as the level three diplomas and apprenticeships

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

The course is aimed at learners who already have some experience of using and are reasonably confident with the core office products from Microsoft. It is also essential that have a reasonable understanding of ICT concepts such as security and file management. Ideally, you will have already completed a level 1 qualification in the use of IT. Anyone not being progressed internally (current WAES IT students) must complete a college assessment to ensure they are at the right level for the class.

What topics does the course cover?

Areas covered will include using ICT to plan and analyse complex multistep tasks, select and use appropriate software applications and tools effectively. Interact with and use ICT systems safely and securely, managing information storage and retrieval. Make use of presentation software to design and deliver your message effectively.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught in class, although a degree of home based self-study is essential to ensure a successful outcome. The final assessment will be a number of practical time based tasks and questions that cover the areas taught.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Please come to class prepared to study, it is advisable to bring a notepad and pens and a folder top store any work in. Your tutor may recommend a range of publications to support your studies. The college will provide you with free access to Microsoft office 365 and a fully licenced copy of Microsoft Office 2016.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

Evidence your ability to use core office software to a more advanced level utilising the built in tools and menus to help you become more efficient. Carry out a range of complex tasks demonstrating your understanding of the processes needed to create complex documents and display data in an analytical fashion. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the security and safety issues around using ICT systems and how to prevent them.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

The level 2 course will support your progression in to level 3 ICT or a Diploma. You may also diversify into desktop support of first line technical support.
