On completing the introduction successfully in term one you will progress to the Level 2 Certificate in January, which will run over terms two and three.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

Yes, please contact our customer services before enrolling.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

Suitable for beginners and those with a little floral creation experience. Basic written English, and Maths are needed to record your work, and some computer skills would be an advantage.

What topics does the course cover?

- You will prepare flowers and foliage for flower designs. This important preparatory stage will ensure your displays last longer and stay fresher.
- Recognising some flower and plant materials and knowing their botanical and common names.
- Creating flower designs aimed to meet the assessment criteria.
- Introduction to Floristry Tools and equipment.
- Understanding elements and principles of design in floristry and how to create and use techniques within a design.
- Conditioning methods and care of cut flowers.
- Health and safety awareness to keep yourself and colleagues safe.
- An art and craft element will be covered as part of the course to enable you to be able to understand colour texture etc and the relevance this has when creating flower designs.
- Creating a portfolio of work to keep and show as evidence for assessment.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught with weekly practical demonstrations by the tutor, for you to copy with help and guidance given as needed. This qualification is assessed by assignments to provide a clear indication of knowledge and skills. There will be visual aids and question and answer sessions; some group activities, working within a team and working on your own. The tutor will use observation, discussion, individual tutorials and targeted tasks with verbal and written feedback.

You will keep a record of your work each week covering health and safety and evaluation of your designs and progress. Computer skills will be used throughout the course with guidance available.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

If the course is funded for you, all costs are included. If you are self-funding, you will be required to pay for your flowers as part of your learning. This fee is £350. You also require an apron, and a large ring binder folder, pens, pencils and rubber.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

You will have developed confidence and gained skills and knowledge to create designs to a standard to attain the qualification and progress onto level 2, and to create designs for yourself or close friends and family.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

On successful completion of this course, you will have the knowledge and skills to progress to our Level 2 Diploma in Floristry, starting in September, to broaden your skills, or pursue entry-level employment in the floristry industry.
