What is the course about?
Learners will be guided through a wide range of practical tasks, learning all the basic handbuilding techniques along the way. Learners will also be introduced to slip decoration and glazing.
Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?
What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
No prior knowledge of pottery is required to attend this course.
What topics does the course cover?
Pinch pots, coiling, soft slab building, press moulding and hard-slab construction. Basic surface decoration and glazing.
How will I be taught and assessed?
Level 1 Ceramics will be assessed on a continual basis. The tutor will use observation, discussion, individual tutorials and targeted tasks with feedback. Formal assessment will take place at the end of the term. Learners will receive written and oral feedback.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
Although decoration and glaze materials are included, we do make a charge (priced per kilo) for the clay used before the first firing only.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
With these transferable skills learners will have the opportunity to develop their creative potential in ceramics and progress to a BTEC Certificate in term 2 and 3.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
We encourage learners to progress onto our Ceramics Level 2 course.
