What is the course about?

This course covers the basic beginner-level wheel-throwing techniques such as clay preparation and wedging, centering, throwing a cylinder, making bowls and drinking vessels, turning a footring and adding handles. Learners will have one wheel each. Learners will also be able to try simple decoration techniques with slips and on the last session, to glaze some of their produced work.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

No.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

Suitable for beginners with no or some prior knowledge of wheel throwing.
Please note: this course is not suitable for intermediate/advanced throwers.

What topics does the course cover?

Clay preparation, centering, cylinders, bowls, drinking vessels, turning foot-rings, adding handles, slip decoration, glazing.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Learners will receive feedback on progress from the tutor on a regular basis. At the end of the course learners will assess their individual progress and progression with the tutor.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Materials are provided to sue in class, but we do make a small charge (priced per kilo) for the clay used if you wish to take your work home after biscuit firing.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the course learners will be able to centre and make wheel thrown shapes with some confidence.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

You can develop your skills further on one of our specialist ceramics short courses in the daytime or evening, or take an accredited course starting in September.
