What is the course about?

Phonics with confidence! Learn the more complex phonics rules and their exceptions, develop confidence with the terminology, know how to break down words to read them and to build up words to spell them. With support available for Arabic, Spanish and French speakers but ALL are welcome. A series of four online workshops. This course is for learners who know a little about phonics already but who want to develop their reading and spelling skills.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

No.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This course is for learners with little English new to the UK. No prior qualifications are required, however, you may wish to complete our 'Learn to read and spell in English - an introduction to phonics for beginners' first, depending on your confidence and level of English.

What topics does the course cover?

Learn the more complex phonics rules and their exceptions, develop confidence with the terminology, know how to break down words to read them and to build up words to spell them.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This is an on line course of four workshops. There is no formal assessment for this course, the tutor will make continuous informal assessments and teach according to your personal learning needs.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

You will need access to the internet and use of an electronic device such as a mobile phone- ideally a tablet or laptop.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

Using more complex phonics rules and their exceptions, you will be reading and writing in English with increasing fluency.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

After this course you may wish to join more Family Learning workshops or join an ESOL class.
