What is the course about?

This Level 1 Award is intended to provide learners with a broad introduction to the hair and beauty sector, equipping learners with underpinning knowledge and skills specific to the sector alongside a range of transferable employability skills.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a Level 1 beginners course so you do not need any previous hair or make-up experience. You are required to have Entry Level 3 English and maths and basic IT skills.

What topics does the course cover?

In this course will gain a general introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector and understand the characteristics of working in the sector, what services are offered, working patterns and occupational roles. You will practise make-up techniques, selecting products, considering the face structure, preparing the face, applying and removing make-up, day and evening makeups and you will practise Hair Styling using styling techniques, plaiting and twisting products and following health and safety.

How will I be taught and assessed?

The course will be taught through a blend of practical work, demonstrations and theory classes delivered on site in class and on line. You will build a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed in order to demonstrate your competance and gain your qualification. You will need access to reliable internet and the use of a PC or laptop in order to attend the online sessions.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Learners are expected to provide their own kit of brushes, combs and scissors. There is a studio fee which will cover most of the products and equipment that you will need for the course. Your tutor can advise you on this in week 1 abut the kit you will need to purchase.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

You will be able to prepare the skin and client for a consultation and make-up for day and evening plus create different hair styling techniques to produce different finished looks. You will have an understanding about the diffent aspects of the hair and make-up industry.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

Upon successful completion of this course you can progress onto Level 2 course in Make-up or Hairdressing.
