What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a beginners course so no particular skills, just a keen interest in learning about working in the industry.You will need to have an English level of Entry 3 Functional Skills or above. This can be established through and English assessment when you apply for the course. You will also need to have basic IT skills as there are written assignments each week that are carried out directly onto the computer.You must also be able to attend 100% to each class and from 9.30 – 3.30There will also be an interview with a member of the Make-up department to make sure you are on the right level courseIf you wish to move onto Level 2 courses, you will be advised to study English Functional Skills alongside the L1 Make-up course. This will help you to then qualify for L2 Make-up or Hairdressing after L1.

What topics does the course cover?

The course covers a range of topics to give an good overview and insight into the skills required for working in the industry and for moving on to a Level 2 course.These are:Basic Make-up Application, Skin Care, Styling Womens Hair,Presenting a Professional Image in a Salon, Follow health and safety in the salon, Evening Makeup

How will I be taught and assessed?

The course will be taught through a blend of practical work, demonstrations and theory classes delivered on site in class and on line. You will build a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed in order to demonstrate your competence and gain your qualification. You will need access to reliable internet and the use of a PC or laptop in order to attend the online sessions. The course includes weekly sessions on computers to complete written assignments, so you must have some basic IT skills to join this class

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

You will be expected to provide your own kit of make-up brushes and combs. Make up products and Hair products and electrical equipment are provided.Your teacher will advise you on where to buy your kit, in the first session. There are bursaries available for learners on concessions. Advice on this can be accessed through the Learning Experience Team.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

Upon successful completion of this course and if you have the correct level of English (L1 to move onto a L2 Make-up or Hair course) you can progress to any of the Level 2 courses in Makeup, Women’s Hairdressing or Barbering.You will have an interview with the hair and make-up department if you would like to progress in this way
