What is the course about?
The Level 1 Certificate is an introduction to the Make-up and Hairdressing industry. As well as looking at the roles within the industry, you will learn how to work with a client, how to apply makeup and style hair.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
This is a Level 1 beginners course, so you do not need any previous hair or make-up experience. You are required to have Entry Level 3 literacy.
What topics does the course cover?
You will gain a general introduction to the hair and beauty sector and understand the characteristics of working in the sector: what services are offered, working patterns and occupational roles. You will practise make-up techniques: selecting products, considering the face structure, preparing the face, applying and removing make-up and you will practise Hair Styling: using techniques, products and following health and safety.
How will I be taught and assessed?
The course will be taught through practical work and through assignments that will help to develop your understanding of the industry and the roles within it. You will develop a portfolio of evidence for assessment.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
The studio fee covers most of the equipment and materials you will use during the course. You will be expected to buy your own make-up brushes. Your tutor can advise you on this in week 1
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
You will be able to prepare the skin and client for a consultation and make-up for day and evening/party, plus create different hair styling techniques to produce different finished looks. You will have an understanding about the different aspects of the hair and make-up industry.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
On completion of this course you can progress onto Level 2 certificate in make-up or hairdressing, or you could consider a short make-up course, such as face painting.
