What is the course about?

This level 1 course is designed to help you improve your practical English skills. You will be able to apply the skills learnt in everyday life, both at home and in the workplace.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

Yes, please contact our customer services before enrolling.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a Level 1 course. Before you can enrol, you will need to take an initial assessment and have a short interview with one of our staff, so we can ensure this is the right level for you. [The course does not include specific grammar or vocabulary teaching and therefore will not support the learning needs of ESOL learners who have not completed ESOL to Level 2.]

What topics does the course cover?

The course covers reading skills (eg, understanding and identifying language features of the text) and writing texts up to 250 words (eg, formal emails, articles, reviews and reports). The speaking unit covers discussion and presentation skills. The course builds on from the Functional Skills Entry level 3 or ESOL level 2 classes.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will attend 5 hours a week, where your tutor will be using pair and small group work to support your learning. You will be encouraged to use English online learning resources to enhance your learning. There are three formal assessments: reading, writing and speaking.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

The course is free, but you are expected to supply your own paper, pen and folder. You will be advised to buy a course book or borrow it from the library. Access to a PC, laptop or compatible tablet with internet is essential for the online element. If you do not have internet access, we strongly recommend you make full use of our learning centres or your local library.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the course you will have built your confidence in using English in written and spoken communication and be ready to take the relevant Functional Skills assessment. On successful completion of the course you will be able to progress on to the next qualification in Functional Skills or your chosen vocational pathway.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

Successful completion will help you move to the next level, such as Preparation for GCSE, and GCSE English language.
