What is the course about?

This course will cover all the basic preparation and construction processes - pinching, coiling, slab building, press-moulding, wheel throwing, surface decoration and glazing. It will teach you skills necessary to progress onto our UAL Level 2 course in ceramics.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

Yes, please contact our customer services before enrolling.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a Level 1 course aimed at beginners with a keen interest in the subject.
- A minimum level of E3 Functional Skills in English is required for this course.
- You will also need to have basic IT skills as there are assignments each week that are carried out directly onto the computer.
- If you wish to move on to a Level 2 course, you will be advised to study Functional Skills, Level 1 English alongside this course.

What topics does the course cover?

Clay preparation, pinch pots, coil pots, soft slab and hard slab-building, working with press-moulds, wheel throwing, surface decoration and glazing.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Learners will receive feedback on progress from the tutor on a regular basis. There will be group discussions, individual tutorials, and targeted tasks with feedback. Formal assessments will take place throughout your course, and learners will receive oral and written feedback and they will assess their own individual progress and progression with the teacher.

Research and recording of your work will be in both digital and non-digital formats and you be expected to record your work and progress digitally.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

The materials fee covers all use of equipment and kiln firings, plus decoration and specified glaze materials. You will also be issued with a sketchbook.

There will be a small charge (priced per kilo) for the clay used before the first firing, and for specialist materials that are not offered as a core part of the course e.g. porcelain. For your self-directed study, a basic art kit is required e.g. pens, pencils, brushes, paints, and scissors.

Other costs include an investment in your time to complete self-directed study outside of the tutor led activities, around 4-6 hours per week.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the Level 1 you will have gained a thorough introduction into ceramics practice and will have established systematic recording techniques, which will help with future development. You will be able to work independently with confidence.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

This course will enable learners to progress onto our Level 2 UAL Diploma in ceramics to broaden your skills (starting in September). This will be discussed towards the end of the course with the tutor.
