What is the course about?
During this course you will improve your skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening. You'll be able to apply these skills in everyday life, including in the workplace. You will take an exam at Level 1 and will gain a recognised certificate for your effort.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
This is a Level 1 course. Before you can enrol, you will need to have an interview with one of our initial assessors to make sure the course is suitable for you. Please allow enough time for this to take place. This is a very popular course, enrol early to avoid disappointment.
What topics does the course cover?
The course covers the following topics and more: learning the difference between formal/informal language, different text types (newspapers, official documents, magazines, etc.), identifying the main points from texts, writing for a range of purposes and audiences.
How will I be taught and assessed?
Your tutor will use pair and small group work. All our classes are equipped with an interactive whiteboard making learning fun and more effective. You will be given handouts and homework on a regular basis.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
An A4 folder to keep your work, and pen and paper.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
At the end of the course you will take a test. You will also have improved your writing skills to a Level 1 ability.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
You will need 85% attendance and have successfully passed the Level1 Functional Skills exam to progress onto Functional Skills at Level 2.
