What is the course about?
This course is appropriate if you can already communicate effectively and fluently in a range of everyday situations, such as taking part in a discussion and writing a letter. The course covers all the language skills, although the main focus is on improving your reading and writing. Grammar is included as an integral part.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
This is a level 1 course. Before you can enrol, you will need to have an interview with one of our initial assessors to make sure the course is suitable for you. If you already study with us, your current tutor can help you to enrol.
What topics does the course cover?
Achieve a level of attainment in English which is appropriate to your needs. Use language confidently at a level to function in school or college, at work or in society in general. Engage in learning which is relevant to you and will provide opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. Achieve a nationally recognised qualification.
How will I be taught and assessed?
The course is mainly online. You will be expected to do homework regularly and will make use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Teams). When you are ready, you will take Skills for Life exams in speaking and listening.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
You will need access to a computer and some IT skills. Pens, pencils and writing paper. A folder to keep all your course materials. An English dictionary - your teacher can give advice and suggestions.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
This course will enable you to identify the main points in straightforward text, identify the main events in straightforward text, use language features to identify meaning in straightforward text and identify the meaning of words in straightforward texts. You will identify the purpose of straightforward text and obtain relevant specific information from straightforward text. You will plan a text for a specific purpose. You will produce content appropriate to purpose, use appropriate language for a given task, structure text in a logical sequence for purpose, use grammar correctly, use punctuation correctly and spell words correctly. You will be able to complete a form with open and closed responses correctly.
