What is the course about?

The content of the course has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. Within this course we have also embedded a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and young people’s Mental Health .

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a Level 2 course. Learners need to have a minimum of functional skills Level 1 speaking and listening, reading and writing and Functional skills level 1 Maths. Evidence of your certificates for your English will need to be seen. Additionally, you should have at least basic digital IT skills. You may need to have an Initial Assessment followed by an interview to assess your full suitability for the course.

What topics does the course cover?

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and young people’s Mental Health will develop your knowledge and understanding in topics such as children and young people’s mental health in context, mental health problems commonly associated with children and young people, the impact of mental ill-health on children and young people and support available to maintain mental wellbeing in children and young people.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is a mixture of on line learning with some classroom activities where possible. You will gain the knowledge by attending the college and then apply the skills in placement each week. You will be assessed by producing an e-portfolio of evidence that proves your ability and competence to work with children. You will also be assessed on your competency in supporting children by having direct observation and professional discussion with an experienced and qualified assessor. Level 2 Certificate in understanding children and young people's mental health does not require a work placement.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Learners on a low income or in receipt of applicable benefits will not be required to pay a fee. You will need regular access to a computer or laptop and reliable internet service to complete this course. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

Upon completion you will be able to work in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

This qualification can lead to employment as a Teachers assistant and/or opportunities to progress to a Level 3 Diploma in teaching assistant course.
