What is the course about?
The content of this course will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to provide a safe and stimulating environment for children. It will enable you to support child development and understand how to safeguard children. You will learn about legislations, policies and procedures that influence the childcare provision and ways of implementing them in your practice. You will be required to complete a DBS in the college and undertake voluntary work experience in a Nursery.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
This is a Level 2 course. Learners need to have Level 1 reading and writing and Level 1 in speaking and listening skills. Evidence of your certificates for your English will need to be seen. Additionally, you should have at least basic digital IT skills.
You will need to have an Initial Assessment and further to the Initial Assessment you will also need to attend an interview to assess your full suitability for the course. You will also need a basic level of digital skills.
What topics does the course cover?
There are 14 units on this course covering some of the following topics - strategies for promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour, knowledge and understanding of child and young people’s development, promoting positive relationships with children and adults, safeguarding children and young people, supporting children and young people's health and safety and the importance of play and creativity.
How will I be taught and assessed?
This course is a mixture of on line learning with some classroom activities where possible. You will gain the knowledge by attending the college and then apply the skills in placement each week. You will be assessed by producing an e-portfolio of evidence that proves your ability and competence to work with children. You will also be assessed on your competency in supporting children by having direct observation and professional discussion with an experienced and qualified assessor.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
Learners on a low income or in receipt of applicable benefits will not be required to pay a fee. You will need regular access to a computer or laptop and reliable internet service to complete this course. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
By the end of this course you will have gained an accredited Level 2 qualification in childcare. By the end of the course you will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of Safeguarding, Health and Safely. You will be able to work with others to support and promote children’s development. You will have working knowledge of the legislation, policies and procedures that are required by the OFSTED inspection. The course will have developed your ICT and research skills.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
This qualification can lead to employment as a nursery assistant and/or opportunities to progress to a Level 3 childcare or teaching assistant course.
