What is the course about?
Level 2 City and Guilds Diploma in Floristry is an intensive, two day a week, intermediate level course designed to provide opportunities for candidates to learn the skills and knowledge required by a junior florist or floral decorator. There is also a work experience module, which is valuable for finding future work opportunities.
This course is for those who wish to study floristry at a commercial level and offers progression from our Level 2 Certificate course.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
You should have a Level 1 Foundation Diploma in floristry or a Level 2 Certificate in Floral Design (from WAES), or worked in the industry in some capacity and have knowledge of flowers and floral design. You need Level one or above English and Maths, and good computer skills are essential for this course, as all work progress needs to be recorded digitally.
What topics does the course cover?
This course will cover ten practical units in floristry:
- An introduction to the art and design for florists
- Checking and monitoring the quality of incoming cut materials
- Identifying and maintaining the condition of plants and planted designs
- Preparing and constructing tied floristry designs
- Planning, preparing and constructing funeral designs
- Planning, preparing and constructing floral arrangements
- Planning, preparing and constructing wedding designs with floral materials
- Displaying floristry goods
- Work experience in the floristry industry
- An introduction to function decorating using floral displays
How will I be taught and assessed?
You will develop skills as we work through the varied practical units with techniques and skills taught by demonstrations and hand one practice with flowers and foliage supplied weekly.There is one assignment per unit designed to sample the practical activities and underpinning knowledge. Assessments will take place in class throughout the year and each unit is graded (Pass, Merit, Distinction).
The tutor will use observation, discussion, individual tutorials and targeted tasks with verbal and written feedback.
You will work in both digital and non-digital formats and be expected to digitally record your work, upload it online and produce a digital or e-portfolio of work for assessment.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
If the course is funded for you, all costs are included. If you are self funding, you will be required to pay for your flowers as part of your learning. This fee is £600. You also require a floristry toolbox and apron, and a large ring binder folder, pens, pencils and rubber.
Other costs include an investment in your time to complete self-directed study outside of the tutor led activities, around 6-8 hours per week.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
- Produce design that are to industry standards able to interpret design specifications
- Cost designs to gain a retail value, select and care for flowers
- Knowledge of the care and suitability of the designs produced and varied occasions they are suited for
- You will be able to prepare your flowers and foliage, to produce longer lasting arrangements
- You will have some flowers and foliage to take home to display.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
On successful completion of this course, you will have the knowledge and skills to progress to our Level 3 Certificate in Floristry, starting in September, to broaden your skills; or you could pursue employment in the floristry industry as a junior florist or floral decorator.
