What is the course about?

Studying maths has the potential to lead to careers which are financially very well rewarded. Careers for people with good maths skills and qualifications are not only well paid, but they are interesting and rewarding. People who have studied maths are in the fortunate position of having excellent career choices. This course has three main elements i.e. Pure maths, Statistics and Mechanics. Careers in Science, Medicine, Engineering and Software development are just a few examples where a high level of mathematical understanding is required.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

No.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a Level 3 AS Level course, before you can enrol, you will need to have a grade 6 in GCSE Maths (within the last 12 months) or take an initial assessment and have a short interview with one of our staff, so we can ensure this is the right level for you.

What topics does the course cover?

The course covers the following: Pure Mathematics - Methods and techniques which underpin the study of all other areas of mathematics, such as, proof, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and vectors. Statistics - Reaching conclusions from data and calculating the likelihood of an event occurring. Mechanics - The modelling of the world around us, the motion of objects and the forces acting on them.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Your tutor will be using pair and small group work. All our classes are equipped with an interactive whiteboard making learning fun and more effective. You will be given handouts and homework on a regular basis. You will also be given homework on an online learning platform so access to the internet is mandatory.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

You will be expected to supply your own additional resources ie basic stationary, calculator, geometry set etc. Access to a PC, laptop or compatible tablet with internet is essential for the online element. If you do not have internet access we strongly recommend you make full use of our learning centres or your local library.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the course you will be ready to take the relevant AS level exams and progress onto your chosen academical or vocational pathway.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

Progression to higher education in a related field.
