What is the course about?

Do you want a career in teaching? Are you already working as a trainer, instructor or as a Learning Support Assistant and would like to further your qualifications? Maybe you are a little unsure about your next steps so would like to get a taste of the profession without fully committing to a year-long course. The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is exactly what you are looking for. This introductory course will offer you the chance to learn about the basics of the classroom and the role and responsibilities of a teacher. Working with your classmates and tutor in a supportive, collegiate environment, you will develop the basic skills required for a career in the classroom, but also your confidence and presence as you learn how to manage the learning space and facilitate learning, both face-to-face and in the online or hybrid classroom. We will ensure your first steps into the profession are well-informed, with input from skilled practitioners across WAES, including coordinators from the Basic Skills department and our dynamic Diversity and Inclusion department, as well as from members of the Senior Leadership Team. So, if you want to spend your days up on your feet, in front of a classroom, inspiring learners to fulfil their potential, apply today for our next course dates

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

Yes, please contact our customer services before enrolling.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a Level 3 course; therefore, learners will need to have Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths or a grade 4 in GCSE English and Maths to undertake this qualification. You do not need to have any prior experience or qualifications in teaching to apply for this course.

What topics does the course cover?

The Level 3 Award introduces you to the knowledge and skills required by teachers in the further education and skills sector: Unit 1: Understanding the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training, Unit 2: Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training (includes a 15 minute micro-teach on a subject of your choice), Unit 5: Understanding assessment in education and training.

How will I be taught and assessed?

THIS COURSE LISTING IS FOR THE 1 WEEK INTENSIVE version of the Level 3 Award. PLEASE SEE OTHER OPTIONS FOR DAY/EVENING CLASSES OVER A NUMBER OF WEEKS. The course is delivered by our highly experienced team of tutors, where you will develop your theoretical knowledge as well as have regular opportunities to put your emerging teaching skills into practice. You will be taught in a face-to-face classroom, although some delivery will be online in order to support your development as a confident teacher in the online or hybrid classroom. This will include learning about MS Teams and how to use some of the necessary functions for effective online delivery, for example: using the chat effectively for contributions, breakout rooms for collaboration, and quizzes and polls for feedback. You will be assessed through written and spoken assessments which you will upload into an online portfolio. There is also a practical element to the assessment. This will include delivering a 15-minute micro teach session and completion of a minimum of 45-minutes of peer observations. Your work will be internally and externally verified to ensure all the criteria are met.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

A key part of the journey to becoming a teacher is developing good organisational skills, so folders with dividers and document pockets will be essential to organise any notes and worksheets. You will also need access to a laptop or PC and have Wifi. Some delivery will be online in order to prepare you for the online and hybrid teaching world, plus, you will benefit from this for easy completion and uploading of assessments.
