What is the course about?

This one year course is designed to inspire and develop skills in your ceramic practice at an advanced level. The Level 3 Certificate in Art and Design will give you the opportunity to learn how to develop research in 2D (using drawing, collage, etc.) and translate and communicate your ideas through maquettes and models into 3D ceramic outcomes. Both functional and sculptural ceramics will be explored. Learners are encouraged to be experimental and develop skills in hand-building, wheel throwing, surface decoration and specialist techniques according to your own interests and personal direction. By the end of the course you will have advanced skills and knowledge of ceramics. This course will give you an excellent platform from which to work independently, as a practitioner, or to take your studies further in Higher Education.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This course is for learners with Level 2 (or equivalent level of experience) in ceramics. Acceptance onto the course is through application and interview only. Evidence of research and drawing skills will be required. You will have, or be working towards a level 2 in English.

What topics does the course cover?

Research, design development, prototype building, hand-building, wheel throwing, surface decoration, and glazing techniques will be covered. You will develop your visual communication, presentation of project ideas and design development with guidance from your tutor. Learners work independently to develop their own personal project work.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Level 3 Ceramics comprises 3 separate units which will be assessed on a continual basis. Your tutor will use observation, discussion, individual tutorials, and targeted tasks with feedback. Formal assessment will take place at the end of each term. You will build a portfolio of work, which will be assessed to gain a pass, merit or distinction at Level 3.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

The studio fee covers all use of equipment and kiln firings, plus decoration and glaze materials. We do make a charge (priced per kilo) for the clay used before the first firing only.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the Level 3 you will have established systematic recording techniques which will help with future development. Learners will be able to work independently with confidence in all construction techniques and enhance ceramic work with surface decoration. You will have built a portfolio of advanced work.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

This course could enable you to progress onto a university course or possibly into self-employment. Working with 3D design project briefs will enable you to bring together a range of technical skills and materials, and to develop a broad portfolio of work.
