What is the course about?

This course encourages you to be experimental and think in different ways about fashion, not just from a design perspective, but also how the changing world around us impacts how we make and respond to fashion. Through developing your skills of reflection and evaluation the course will broaden your confidence in your creative ability, encourage you to go out of your comfort zone and have the courage of your convictions in your design, visual communication and construction choices. Alongside these practical skills, you will also develop your responsibility as a designer of fashion product and gain an awareness of the role you play as a creative practitioner in society. Understanding the roles and career opportunities in the fashion industry is also a focus of the course.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

You should have experience of practical fashion or textile design, for example through work experience or have completed a Level 2 qualification in Fashion.

Level 2 English and Maths plus good IT skills are required for this course.

What topics does the course cover?

The course is practical and theory based. You will learn how the creative fashion process works and the importance of understanding, and being able to communicate to others the reasoning behind your design and make choices. You will demonstrate and develop your practical and technical design and make choices during the course. You will develop skills of reflection and evaluation, and understand the importance of their continual application in the creative process. At the same time, you will gain an understanding of how contextual awareness informs your creative choices, and appropriately impacts end users.

You will be introduced to a variety of high tech and low-tech tools, using different media and techniques in 2D and 3D to develop fashion projects. The course will teach you why research is important and how it feeds the creation of fashion ideas. Working on assignments throughout the course you will carrying out research, develop and communicate fashion and textile ideas and interpret these into 3D fashion outcomes thorough sampling, pattern cutting, draping and construction. You will develop fashion related 4D skills leading to time-based outcomes.

Throughout the course you will participate in on-going discussion and exploration of career roles and opportunities in the fashion industry.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught by a fashion specialist, with targeted tutor and technician support, feedback, and supervision. As the course progresses, and your creative awareness and skills increase, you will be able to work in a self-directed and independent way on your final major project, the outcome of which will be displayed at the end of the year showcase.

You will work in both digital and non-digital formats and be expected to digitally record your work, upload it online and produce a digital or e-portfolio of work for assessment. The tutor will use observation, discussion, individual tutorials, and targeted tasks with feedback. Formal assessment will take place at stages throughout the course, and you will receive written and oral feedback.

There is no formal examination: you will be assessed on the Final Major Project and the course work you produce which will be externally moderated by UAL.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

The materials fee covers some materials such as card, pattern paper, and a sketchbook. You will be required to provide your own fabric for your garments and for your experimentation activities. Calico will be charged at £2 per metre. For your self-directed study a basic sewing kit is required e.g. fabric scissors, pencils, masking tape, sewing threads, needles, unpick, paper, pattern-cutting paper, tape measure. Your own basic art and drawing materials would also be useful to have.

Other costs include an investment in your time to complete self directed study outside of the tutor led activities, around 8-10 hours per week.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the Level 3 you will have gained knowledge of the fashion industry in terms of roles and careers. You will be able to point to and discuss some of the ways fashion can impact the social, economic and political environments, and how your creative practice, and responsibility as a creative practitioner may be informed by this wider context.

You will be able to respond to a brief, co-ordinating all aspects of time management and the creative process involved in realising that brief, including research, experimentation and visual communication through to 3D realisation – pattern cutting and construction of your intended fashion garment outcomes.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

You will have the knowledge and skills to progress to higher education fashion courses to broaden your skills. Many of our learners have gone on to study at the top London Universities. You could also pursue employment in the fashion and/or creative industries, whether for an employer of freelance.
