What is the course about?
This level 1 course is for learners attending our vocational classes, who need to improve their practical maths skills to progress to the next level. Designed to help you improve your use of maths in everyday environments, you will be able to apply the skills learnt at home and in the workplace and in support of your course.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
This is a Level 1 course and you may be referred to attend, as part of the initial assessment process for your chosen vocational class or as a requirement of moving to a higher level.
What topics does the course cover?
The course covers the following topics and more: understanding how to use whole numbers with up to two significant figures, understanding how to use addition and subtraction in practical situations, recognise and use familiar measures, including time, area and money.
How will I be taught and assessed?
You will attend one class session a week, where your tutor will be using pair and small group work to support your learning. You will be required to carryout a mandatory minimum of 25 hours online self directed online learning.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
The course is free but you will be expected to supply your own additional resources. Access to a PC, laptop or compatible tablet with internet is essential for the online element. If you do not have internet access we strongly recommend you make full use of our learning centres or your local library.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
By the end of the course you will be better able to use maths in everyday environments and will be ready to take the relevant Functional Skills assessment and progress onto your chosen vocational pathway.
