What is the course about?

Level 1 Functional Skills English will improve your confidence and ability to read and write English in every day life and in the workplace through practise with relevant tasks. You will also practise the use of spoken English suitable for professional or formal situations.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

Yes, please contact our customer services before enrolling.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is a Level 1 course. Before you can enrol, you will need to take an initial assessment and have a short interview with one of our staff, so we can ensure this is the right level for you. [The course does not include specific grammar or vocabulary teaching and therefore will not support the learning needs of ESOL learners who have not completed ESOL to Level 2.]

What topics does the course cover?

You will study reading, writing and speaking and listening in practical contexts of every day life or the workplace. Skills include extracting or inferring information from written texts, building confidence with punctuation and paragraphs to write a range of types of text (for example formal letters and e-mails, articles, reviews and reports) and practising speaking in formal situations such as professional or community meetings. If you have studied Functional Skills Entry 3 or ESOL Level 2 it will build on the skills you learned on those courses.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will attend a mixture of online and class based lessons where you will participate in pair and small group work as well as whole class teaching.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

The course is free but you will be expected to supply your own additional resources. Access to a PC, laptop or compatible tablet with internet is essential for the online element (these are preferable to a smartphone). If you do not have internet access we strongly recommend you make full use of our learning centres or your local library.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the course you will have built your confidence in using English in written and spoken communication and be ready to take the relevant Functional Skills assessment. On successful completion of the course you will be able to progress on to the next qualification in Functional Skills or your chosen vocational pathway.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

Successful completion will help you move to the next level of your vocational course. You will be able to progress to a Level 2 Functional Skills course, which is an essential requirement for entry to vocational Level 3.
