What is the course about?
This course is a progression programme available to support individuals who have recently finished (up to 18 months ago) the full level 1 Functional Skill in English and wish to move on to our English GCSE programme in September.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
This is a level 1 English progression course, if you are not a current learner with WAES we will need to see proof of your current levels and may request that you take an online and written assessment to ensure that you have retained the requisite amount of skills and knowledge needed for this class.
What topics does the course cover?
The course will cover three elements, each chosen to support your transition from level 1 Functional Skills to GCSE. They are - skills used in reading for meaning, spelling rules and strategies in practical use and writing for meaning skill.
How will I be taught and assessed?
This is a predominantly classed based course but you will be expected to commit to at least 2 hours of self directed home study, which will be supported by your tutor. The course is assessed on a continuous basis, culminating in the creation of a portfolio, of work based evidence that demonstrates your skills and understanding of the subjects covered.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
You will need to provide your own folders and sleeves to store your work and notes safety. Your tutor will also give you a list of useful books that you may wish to purchase, and you will of course need to bring your own note paper and pens.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
Move to the GCSE programme.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
If you are successful in passing all 6 units, a final course assessment and an demonstrate a commitment to your studies, you will automatically be moved to the GCSE programme starting in September.
