What is the course about?

You will build your proficiency and confidence in handbuilding and/or wheel throwing. You'll produce quality work through a project-based assignment, using contemporary and historical ceramics for inspiration. Learners will be encouraged to be experimental with surface decoration and glazing.

Please note: This course will be tutor supported for half of each session (90 minutes). This course is aimed at learners who need studio access with limited guidance and feedback.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

No.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

Not suitable for beginners. This course is for learners who have already achieved a good Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Ceramics.

What topics does the course cover?

Research and design development, intermediate and advanced construction techniques, wheel throwing, surface decoration and glazing.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Learners will receive feedback on progress from the tutor on a regular basis. At the end of the course learners will assess their individual progress and progression with the tutor.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Although decoration and glaze materials are included, we do make a charge (priced per kilo) for the clay used before the first firing.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

By the end of the course learners will be able to develop an individual design, construct a final project and enhance and complete project work with appropriate surface decoration and glazes.

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

This course will enable learners to progress on to other advanced courses, higher education or into self-employment.
