What is the course about?

This course is designed to provide Intermediate and Advanced level Learners with an opportunity to develop and improve their oil painting skills and gain a broader understanding of this versatile medium. Experiment with various textures and oil painting techniques to develop a series of studies which consider the relationship between positive and negative form and the subject of a painting and its surface. You will explore the traditional and contemporary materials and methods of oil painting. Topics will include constructing canvases, priming, preparing grounds (including gesso) and use of dammar varnish and mastic mediums, egg tempera. Instruction will be given on paint handling, working with varied consistencies of paint and brushwork. Emphasis will be placed upon the art of looking, concentrating upon selection and composition, colour and tonal relationships. Through practical examples, individual and group discussion, you will learn how to start, develop and resolve a painting. Participants will work from still-life subjects and other observational sources._x000D_

What topics does the course cover?

Priming, preparing grounds, colour theory, mixing colour, developing skills in mixing observed colour, exploration of the various textures of oil paint, paint handling, brushwork, selection and composition._x000D_

How will I be taught and assessed?

Learners will receive feedback on progress from the tutor regularly. At the end of the term learners will assess individual progress and progression with the tutor._x000D_

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

Some basic materials are provided. There will be a recommended amount of additional materials required for this course, advice will be given on the first class as to what and where to buy materials. Suggestions; _x000D_pencil - 4B grade, rubber, pen, 1-inch roll of masking tape._x000D_4 brushes: ½ & ¼ inch round hog hair, ¼ & ¾ inch hog hair flat. palette or pad of disposable paper palettes & a palette knife._x000D_Student quality oil colour paint set. b_x000D_Essential colours - black, titanium white, cadmium red hue, alizarin crimson, lemon yellow, ultramarine blue._x000D_

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

Learners can progress on to a range of creative courses such as Portraiture and Life Painting. _x000D_
