What is the course about?
The Retail Pathway forms part of the WAES Traineeship Programme - This short, flexible education programme is designed for 19 and above, who are interested in working in the Retailindustry and wish to aquire the crucial skills and experience that many employers look for in. The traineeship comprises of a high-quality work experience placement, work preparation training and English and Maths qualifications (if required). Trainees are given the opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job experience along with industry-recognised qualifications. All of which makes them ‘work ready’ – boosting their chances of gaining employment as well as improving their long term prospects.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?
This programme is being offered at Level 1 with additional qualifications at both Levels 2 and Level 3 and is aimed at those with little to no work experience, but those who are committed and hard-working.
What topics does the course cover?
You will be given the chance to gain an array of acredited qualifications. These qualifications concentrate on employment, and reflect the career goals and capabilities of the trainee. For example, Level 1 Certificate in Retail, Level 1 Certificate in Employability Skills, Functional Skills in English and Mathematics (multi-level: dependant on your Initial Assessment score), Level 2 Award in Health and Safety Awareness, Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering and Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work.
How will I be taught and assessed?
Tutor supported classroom based teaching with continual feedback and support. The use of an e-portfolio where assignments/work can be set and evidence gathered and submitted as part of on-going learning by the trainee. In addition to the classroom based delivery, trainees will be assessed during work experience placement in relation to the Retail industry and a judgement made against the performance criteria by the Assessor. Trainees will also be required to exams set by the exam board - online and paperbased.
Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?
The programme is free to those that meet eligibility requirements. You will need to equip yourself with stationary for note taking and storing handouts. Having access to a desktop computer, laptop or tablet at home is essential to your progress and will aid understanding, however if no computer is available at home we strongly recommend you make good use of our Learning Resource Centres at Lisson Grove, Amberley Road or Pimlico or your local library.
By the end of the course what should I be able to do?
Successful trainees will gain an array of qualifications from Level 1 through to Level 3 in; Retail, Employability Skills, Functional Skills in English and Mathematics, Health and Safety Awareness, Food Safety in Catering and Emergency First Aid at Work.
What are the progression opportunities following this course?
On successful completion, trainees will be guaranteed interview with Employer Partner and support from the National Career Service for opportunities into further education or an apprenticeship.
