What is the course about?

Ideal for beginners and advanced printmakers alike. For beginners this course will provide an expert introduction to etching, lino and drypoint printmaking. You will explore the techniques, tools and materials used to produce and print images chosen by you and/or with your tutor. You will be guided to explore techniques creatively to get the best results for you. More advanced students may work independently in a medium of their choice. You will be supported by the tutor on a one to one basis, negotiating and developing goals in relation to your own projects and images.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

No previous experience is required. This course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced learners.

What topics does the course cover?

This short course will introduce you to Etching, Drypoint, lino cut and monotype printmaking. You will be enabled to explore and manipulate these particular printing methods: eg In dry point and monotype we will explore additive and reduction techniques and the unique opportunities for mark making. In etching you will use line and aquatint hard and soft ground to evolve a richly worked plate, printing techniques will include chine-colle, intalglio and relief printing using black and white and colour. In Lino we will look at mark-making and using single and multiple blocks to build layers, as well as investigating how to prepare imagery for print using specialist tools, papers and inks.

How will I be taught and assessed?

The teaching is structured to be informative and stimulating, the level of challenge gauged to meet the needs of individual learners. Teaching methods will include expert presentations, demonstrations and hand outs, group exercises and discussions, individual tuition and supportive feedback.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

The course fee covers basic materials including Inks, solvent, papers etc course fee also covers one sheet of lino , Zinc and dry point plate. Should you individually require specialist items or work in a particularly large scale you may be asked to provide or purchase extra materials yourself , but you will be given advice and guidance on this by your tutor.

By the end of the course what should I be able to do?

Understand the basic principles of etching, Lino and dry point and monotype printmaking Apply printmaking techniques creatively, to develop your own imageryWork safely in the print making workshopDevelop a portfolio of your own printed artworks

What are the progression opportunities following this course?

Your ideal progression would be another printmaking course. Alternatively, you could develop a wider approach to art by undertaking any of the accredited drawing and painting courses, at beginner (level 1), Intermediate (level 2) and advanced levels (level 3).
