What is the course about?
This AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Level 2 course offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of accounting. It is ideal for individuals who are starting out in the field or looking to develop essential financial skills for their career. Delivered in partnership with Mindful Education, the course follows a blended learning model that combines the flexibility of online study with the structure of regular classroom sessions. Each week, you will engage with high-quality online learning materials at your own pace, and attend a scheduled class—alternating weekly between online and on-campus delivery. A detailed timetable, clearly outlining which sessions are online and which are on campus, will be provided before the course begins to help you plan your time effectively. This course is part-funded, making it more accessible to learners. On successful completion, you may be eligible to progress to a fully funded AAT Level 3 course. This is a Level 2 course. To enrol, learners are expected to have previously achieved Level 2 Functional Skills in English, covering reading, writing, speaking, and listening. However, Level 1 English Functional Skills can be studied alongside the AAT Level 2 course if not already achieved. In addition, learners should have successfully completed the Level 1 Bookkeeping course prior to starting this Level 2 course. Good digital and IT skills are also essential to support learning and engagement with course materials.
The Level 2 course covers a range of key areas, including: Introduction to Bookkeeping; Principles of Bookkeeping; Principles of Costing; The Business Environment. You will also develop business communications and lifelong learning skills, applying what you learn on the course to the wider industry context.
This course is delivered using a flexible blended learning model in partnership with Mindful Education. The programme combines high-quality online study with regular classroom sessions, giving you the best of both worlds. You will access award-winning video lessons via the Mindful Education platform, available on-demand from any device—phone, tablet, or computer—allowing you to study where and when it suits you. The lessons feature engaging animations and motion graphics to help explain key concepts, alongside interactive case studies, downloadable materials, and practice questions. You should expect to spend approximately 4–5 hours per week studying independently online. You will also attend regular, tutor-led sessions in person. These sessions take place on a rotating weekly basis, alternating between face-to-face classes one week and online learning the next. This structure ensures weekly engagement while providing flexibility around your schedule. During in-person sessions, your tutor will review the content covered online, reinforce learning through group discussions, and provide personalised support and guidance to help you stay on track. Interacting with classmates also creates a collaborative and motivating learning environment.Assessment is conducted via computer-based exams taken throughout the course, as well as a synoptic assessment, which evaluates your understanding of key topics across the full qualification.
This Level 2 course is funded but please see our admission team for full information. You will need regular access to a smartphone, tablet or computer and reliable internet service to complete this course, and will need a non-programmable calculator for assessments. Once enrolled, learners will be given access to Microsoft Office 365.
This qualification will prepare you for junior and entry level accounting roles. It delivers a solid foundation in finance administration - covering areas such as double entry bookkeeping to basic costing principles and using accounting software. On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded an AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting. This internationally recognised AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification enables those working in accounting or those who looking to pursue accountancy as a career to gain knowledge, practical experience and the all-important certification often sought by employers.
The skills and knowledge you will gain throughout this qualification will qualify you for roles including Accounts Assistant, Finance Assistant, Credit Control Assistant or Purchase Ledger Clerk. On successful completion of this course, you can progress to higher levels of the AAT Accounting Qualifications (Level 3 and then on to Level 4). Under the National Skills Fund initiative, you might be eligible for a fully funded Level 3 course if you live in Greater London.
