What is the course about?
This Level 1 NCFE award will cover key principles of painting and drawing, including ways of looking and using varied materials. You will learn to explore ideas and techniques and allow you to develop knowledge and understanding of artistic processes. It will teach you skills necessary to progress onto our level 2 courses in art.
This is a Level 1 course aimed at beginners with a keen interest in the subject.
- A minimum level of E3 Functional Skills in English is required for this course.
- You will also need to have basic IT skills as there are assignments each week that are carried out directly onto the computer.
- If you wish to move on to a Level 2 course, you will be advised to study Functional Skills, Level 1 English alongside this course.
In our specialist studio you will be taught approaches to drawing and painting including observational and expressive skills and methods of research using visual language such as tone, mark making spatial systems and colour theory. You will develop your creative and reflective skills through projects and tutorials, evolving your interests and direction as an artist.
You will work in both digital and non-digital formats and be expected to digitally record your work, upload it online and produce a digital or e-portfolio of work for assessment. The tutor will use observation, discussion, individual tutorials, and targeted tasks with feedback. Formal assessment will take place at stages throughout the course, and you will receive written and oral feedback.
The materials fee covers materials such as card, paper, standard paint colours and a sketchbook. For your self-directed study, a basic art kit is required e.g. brushes, pencils, paints, inks, chalks, charcoal, pens, scissors etc. (this list is not exhaustive).
By the end of the Level 1 you will have gained a thorough introduction into creative art practices and will have established systematic recording techniques, which will help with future development. You will be able to work independently with confidence.
This course will enable learners to progress onto our Level 2 NCFE Award in Art starting in April, or our Level 2 UAL Diploma in Art starting in September. You can also develop your skills further on one of our specialist short courses that run throughout the year. Options will be discussed towards the end of the course with your tutor.
