What is the course about?
Gain Confidence in English is a welcoming Community ESOL course for adults who want to improve their English for everyday life and work. Whether you are new to English or already know a little, the course helps you build confidence step by step. Classes run from Pre-Entry to Entry 3 and provide a supportive space to practise speaking, listening, reading and writing with others in your local community.Lessons focus on real-life situations—such as talking to your child’s school, visiting the doctor, travelling around London or communicating at work—so you can use English in a practical and meaningful way. You will learn useful vocabulary, build simple grammar, and grow your confidence through conversations, pair work, group discussions, role plays and enjoyable learning challenges. Our experienced ESOL tutors offer clear explanations, encouragement and personalised feedback. When you sign up, you’ll be invited to a friendly interview to help place you in the right level, so you feel comfortable and supported from day one.
You do not need any previous qualifications or experience in English. This course is open to complete beginners and to learners with some English. We offer classes from Pre-Entry to Entry 3. At your interview, our team will help identify the level that best suits your skills.
You will develop your Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, all focused on everyday English used in real situations.
You will be taught in person by an experienced ESOL tutor in a welcoming classroom environment. Classes take place in accessible community venues such as your local library, neighbourhood community centre, or a nearby WAES centre, making it easy to learn close to home. There is no formal exam or qualification, so you can learn at your own pace and focus on building confidence. Your progress will be checked informally through class activities, discussions and practical tasks.
This is a free community ESOL course. You do not need to buy any materials or equipment. Please bring a notebook and pen.
By the end of the course, you should feel more confident communicating in English in everyday situations. You will be able to express yourself more clearly, understand simple spoken English more easily, and use a wider range of vocabulary and grammar. Most importantly, you will feel more comfortable speaking with people at home, in your community, and in local services.
After completing this course, you can progress to other community skills courses in Maths, Digital Skills or Green Skills. You may also choose to move into an ESOL or English qualification course to continue building your skills and gain a recognised certificate.
