What is the course about?
Community Knit and Stitch is a friendly and creative Community Course that introduces learners to a range of simple textile skills in a relaxed group setting. It offers an opportunity to explore knitting, crochet and hand sewing while enjoying the social and wellbeing benefits of making together. The course focuses on creativity, confidence building and the pleasure of completing small handmade projects at your own pace.
This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with a little prior experience who wish to refresh or develop their skills. No qualifications, specialist knowledge or previous craft experience are required. Learners of all abilities are welcome, and the tutor will adapt activities to meet individual needs.
The course introduces a range of simple textile techniques, including basic knitting stitches, beginner crochet, and straightforward hand sewing and mending. Learners will explore how to choose materials, understand simple patterns and complete small, manageable craft projects. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on building confidence, practising practical skills and taking part in enjoyable individual or group creative activities.
Teaching is hands on and supportive, with the tutor demonstrating techniques and offering one to one guidance as you work. You will learn through practical activities, shared discussions and opportunities to try out different methods in a relaxed environment. There is no formal assessment; instead, your progress will be observed informally through your growing confidence, participation and the development of your craft pieces.
Basic materials will be available for beginners to get started. As you develop your skills, you may choose to bring your own yarn, needles, hooks or sewing materials, depending on the projects you wish to create. The tutor will advise you on any optional items that may be useful as the course progresses.
By the end of the course, you should feel confident using a range of beginner knitting, crochet or hand sewing techniques to complete small creative projects. You will understand the basics of choosing appropriate tools and materials, and will be able to follow simple patterns or instructions. You will also have developed the confidence to continue practising independently or to join other community craft activities.
After completing this course, you may choose to progress to more advanced fashion, sewing or textiles courses, or other creative programmes offered through WAES. You may also feel ready to join local craft groups, volunteer on community projects or pursue your own independent making.
