Our courses are perfect if you want to improve your reading, writing, numeracy and measurements. Courses run throughout the year at our main WAES centres in Westminster at a variety of times in the week to suit our learners. All our English and maths courses are accredited. Our Functional Skills courses can also help you with other courses that you can study at WAES such as childcare, health and social care, computing and graphic design courses.

To enrol on one of our Functional Skills English or maths courses you'll need to complete an initial assessment.

GCSE English and maths

GCSE are required by most employers and by higher education institutions. It is therefore advisable to take GCSE English and maths and improve your prospect of accessing higher education or have better employment opportunities.

Doing more than one GCSE at the same time

If you intend to study maths and English, please consider whether you do need to study both courses in a single academic year. Studying both maths and English GCSE one year is a big commitment in terms of time for homework and preparation, as well as keeping focused on two subjects. Enrolment on two simultaneous GCSE courses will therefore be at the discretion of the course advisor, dependent on individual circumstances.

Being realistic about your time and capacity in advance will avoid potential issues such dropping one course before the end, or getting lower grades because you were unable to focus fully on both courses.

Assessment

The GCSE qualification is funded by the government. To access the free GCSE, you will need to take an initial assessment.

These courses require an assessment prior to enrolment. Please complete your application and assessment online. If you are having difficulty with the application, please call 020 7297 7297.
