DWP Youth Hub opens at WAES

On Monday 20 September we gathered to celebrate the opening of the DWP Westminster Youth Hub at WAES Lisson Grove centre.

WAES is partnering with the DWP Job Centre Plus in Marylebone to host one of the 110 Youth Hubs which are opening across the UK. This new Youth Hub will be a place that young people aged 18-24 in Westminster can come to receive advice on careers, employment and wellbeing needs from specialist Youth Employability Coaches.

The launch was attended by Karen Buck MP, Cllr Matthew Green, and Theresa Wootten, DWP Service Leader for North London, who all agreed that collaboration between the relevant services to provide a joined-up offer is key to helping young people in Westminster to boost their skills and reach their full potential.

Also speaking at the event, Yasin Chowdhury, 19, who is on a Kickstarter work placement at WAES as a Teaching Assistant, said:
"When I left school after A Levels, I intended to take up a place at Loughborough University, but instead I took a gap year. During that period, I attended the Jobcentre where I heard about the Kickstarter opportunities. I applied for the Teaching Assistant role and was successful. I’ve been two months in the role which I’m enjoying immensely, and this has now opened my eyes to doing a degree apprenticeship in teaching, which will enable me to earn while I learn."
