Lord Mayor opens WAES summer arts exhibition

Friends, supporters, staff and student artists came together on Tuesday 18 June as The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Sarah Richardson, officially opened the Perspectives exhibition at the Mall Galleries.

The annual event to open the gallery celebrates the creative work of WAES students - the artists of the exhibition.

The occasion is also chosen for the announcement and presentation of the David Bowker Prize for oustanding creative achievement, in memory of the late David Bowker, former Programme leader for WAES who is credited with forming the glass department for the organisation.

The 2013 prize David Bowker prize, as chosen by a panel of judges, was presented to Ida Simone Christensen for her charcoal drawing. Julian Brau and Stella Haji-Leonti were highly commended for their respective photography and glass-formed creations.

Impressed with the high quality of the student work on display, the Lord Mayor stayed for over an hour to admire the exhibits which ranged from jewellery to kiln-formed glass creations.
